The KLN-90B is a panel-mounted, IFR-Approach Capable, long-range, airborne navigation system. The purpose of the KLN-90B GPS navigation receiver is to provide the pilot with the aircraft's present position and guidance information. The present position information is processed by the KLN-90B to determine crosstrack error, distance-to-waypoint, ground speed, track angle, time to waypoint, bearing to waypoint and advisory VNAV guidance. An internal data base provides the KLN-90B with information concerning airport, VORS, NDBs, intersections, outer markers, SIDs, STARS, and GPS non-precision approaches throughout the world. Waypoints are stored in the data base by their ICAO identifiers. The ICAO identifiers are, in most cases, taken directly from Jeppesen Sanderson or government aeronautical charts. This data base allows the pilot to create flight plans with a minimum of effort. The data base is contained in a removable data base cartridge. The KLN-90B is available in two database options - Americas and International - that can be easily updated by plug-in cartridge located on back of unit (IBM compatible computer updating also available).
The KLN-90B is able to provide instrument flight rules en route, terminal and non-precision approach using its unique three-inch “split screen” CRT display that shows a built-in moving map with graphics for airports and nav-aids. Flight plan information is entered by the pilot via various knobs and buttons on the front panel. The display consists of a right and left page and a status line at the bottom of the display. The information on the left page is controlled by the concentric knobs on the left side of the unit and the information on the right page is controlled by the concentric knobs on the right side of the unit. The KLN-90B is 6.312 in. wide, 2.00 in. in height, 12.55 in. in length, and weighs 6.30 pounds. The KLN-90B requires 4 cubic feet per minute being provided by a motor blower for cooling. The KLN-90B has an operational temperature of -40° C to +70° C and a max altitude of 50,000 feet. The KLN-90B has a built-in resolver interface that allows the system to be linked directly to aircraft's HSI or CDI or coupled to an autopilot. The KLN-90B is resistant to COMM radio interference.
